I recently had the opportunity to experience Viking Cruises’ Empires of the Mediterranean voyage aboard the Viking Star, exploring some of Southern Europe’s most iconic destinations.  Over ten unforgettable days, this thoughtfully curated voyage connects the Adriatic and Aegean Seas, blending ancient history, medieval towns, and vibrant Mediterranean culture.  From stunning coastal landscapes to immersive cultural experiences, the journey showcased Viking’s signature blend of understated luxury, destination – focused travel and enriching exploration.

From Venice to the Heart of the Adriatic:  Embarking in Venice set the stage perfectly for the voyage ahead.  The journey begin in Koper, where Venetian architecture mets Slovenian countryside, followed by Zadar, a fascinating blend of Roman history and modern innovation.  Walking through Dubrovnik’s remarkably preserved Old Town felt like stepping into a living museum, while Kotor’s medival streets and dramatic mountain backdrop made it one of the most picturesque posts of the entire journey. 

Discovering Greece:  The Greek portion of the itinerary was where the voyage truly earns it’s name.  Visiting Olympia (Katakolon) and standing on the grounds of the ancient Olympic Games began was a profound experience.  Corfu provided a beautiful contrast with it’s lush landscapes, elegant architecture and relaxed atmosphere, while Santorini delivered iconic whitewashed villages and breathtaking caldera views that have made it one of the Mediterranean’s most celebrated destinations. 

The voyage concluded in Athens, where Viking’s included excursions provided valuable insights into the city’s remarkable history.  Exploring the Acropolis and wandering through the charming streets of the Plaka district was the perfect ending to an unforgettable journey through some of the world’s most influencial civilizations.
