Follow me on a Viking Cruise to the Mediterranean

Empires of the Mediterranean

Follow along my unforgettable voyage through the Mediterranean with Viking Cruises, exploring some of the world’s most iconic destinations on the Empires of the Mediterranean voyage from Venice to Athens, aboard the Viking Star.  Over ten (10) days, this thoughtfully curated voyage connects the Adriatic and Aegean Seas, blending ancient history, medieval towns, and modern Mediterranean life – all while tracing the layers of civilization that shaped Southern Europe and enjoying Viking’s signature understated luxury and immersive enrichment.

The itinerary typical sails Venice to Athens, calling on nine destinations across five countries.  Each port is paired with an included excursion that provides context and depth, with optional experiences for guests who want to go further.

From Venice to the Heart of the Adriatic:  Embarkation in Venice, sets the stage perfectly – romantic canals without crowds.  From there the itinerary eases into the Adriatic with Koper, where Venetian architecture meets Slovenian countryside, followed by Zadar, a delightful mix of Roman ruins and modern innovation.  Dubrovnik and Kotor are standouts.  Walking the streets in Dubrovnik feels stepping into a living museum, while Kotor’s medival old town may well be one of the most scenic ports in Europe.

Greece:  The Greek portion of the cruise is where the itinerary truly earns it’s name.  In Olympia (Katakolon) standing on the grounds of the ancient Olympic Games began is profound.  Corfu offers a sober contrast – lush landscapes and elegant architecture – while Santorini delivers iconic caldera views and post-card perfect villages.   The voyage concludes in Athens, where Viking’s included tours provide excellent historical grounding, whether exploring the Acropolis or strolling the Plaka district.

As a Travel Advisor, I pay close attention to the onboard vibe – and Viking excels here.  With no casinos, no kids and no hard sell, the atmosphere is relaxed and engaging.  Highlights include:  All veranda staterooms that make scenic sailing part of the experience; The Explorer’s Lounge, ideal for sailing into ports like Kotor or Santorini; The Nordic Spa, where the hydrotherapy pool and snow grotto are welcomed after full touring days; Destination-focused cuisine, with regional dishes rotating throughout the cruise.  Evenings are low key elegance – live music, lectures, or simply a glass of wine while watching the sun set over the sea.

Who is this cruise perfect for?  I would confidently recommend Viking to guests who prefer smaller ships and longer port stays, travelers who are seeking a seemless, enriching and cultural experience.  Viking offers an elevated cruising experience with complimentary inclusions like WiFi and specialty dining and a relaxed Scandinavian inpired atmosphere designed for the curious traveler.

My voyage was a truly unforgettable experience.  If you are looking for a cruise that balances iconic destinations with depth, comfort and calm sophistication, I would love to talk to you and share my experience with you.
